As a Personal Trainer I often encourage clients to choose an event to enter a few months from the present which will help them to set goals and provide motivation to train.  It also helps to take our minds off the constant trying to lose inches as well as mix up training.

Upon my suggestion to a client that it may be a good idea to enter a fun run, the reply I got was, ''oh, I am not a runner, I never have been!'

So there it was, it was my client's belief that she wasn't a runner.  And just what is it that classifies someone as a runner may I ask?  Is it someone who can run fast, looks athletic, and can complete a marathon distance?  Or is it someone who can run only 5 mins - after all 5 mins of running is still running isn't it?! Does that make you a runner?

Ok, I am getting to a point here!  In direct contrast to my clients belief, I had a huge amount of confidence in her that she could be a runner if she wanted to.  In fact, I believed that she could run a marathon if she put the work in.  Oprah Winfrey is a perfect example of someone who probably doesnt fit the bill of what most people would call a 'runner', yet the belief in herself got her to complete a marathon.

I'd like to share with you a famous quote, and a famous little story about a chicken!

Quote:  'Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right'   Henry Ford

The Chicken
By Gary Barnes

Once upon a time, there was a large mountainside, where an eagle's nest rested. The eagle's nest contained four large eagle eggs. One day an earthquake rocked the mountain, causing one of the eggs to roll down the mountain to a chicken farm located in the valley below. The chickens knew that they must protect and care for the eagle's egg, so an old hen volunteered to nurture and raise the large egg.

One day, the egg hatched and a beautiful eagle was born. Sadly, however, the eagle was raised to be a chicken. Soon, the eagle believed he was nothing more than a chicken. The eagle loved his home and family, but his spirit cried out for more. While playing a game on the farm one day, the eagle looked to the skies above and noticed a group of mighty eagles soaring in the skies. "Oh," the eagle cried, "I wish I could soar like those birds."

The chickens roared with laughter, "You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar."

The eagle continued staring at his real family up above, dreaming that he could be with them. Each time the eagle would let his dreams be known, he was told it couldn't be done. That is what the eagle learned to believe. The eagle, after time, stopped dreaming and continued to live his life like a chicken. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away.

The moral of the story:  You become what you believe you are. So, if you ever dream of becoming an eagle, follow your dreams... not the words of a chicken.

If you really want to achieve anything, and not just restricted to health and fitness, I mean 'anything' it all starts with the way you think.  Your 'beliefs' are your choice.  Imagine what you may be missing out on because of what you choose to believe...

I will leave you to ponder that.
