Food choice, calorie intake, looking and feeling great...
Hello,
my names's Anthony (Director of REALM Training - the Personal and Group
Fitness service in Melbourne, Australia, and creator of this website).
Welcome
to this editon of Conversations with the Coach
Rather than providing this e-newsletter in audio format only, I have also provided the content in script for those of you who like to read. This will enable you to read along with my voice, if it helps absorb the information a little better, as well as enable you to click on the various links scattered throughout the text Total running time: 3 mins 35 secs (Note: Internet Explorer users may have to click on the play icon twice) I have already told this story to many of my clients to help drive home the message about how easy it is to rack up your calorie intake, and why food choice is so important. I had a pack of m and m's a few weeks ago, which I rarely do. The M and M's I had were the chocolate coated peanut, finished off in a hard shell. After I'd consumed the pack, which took me all of 5 mins, I'd decided to look at the nutritional panel to see what the chocolates contained. Total calorie intake from one pack of m & m's (130g) equated to 675. Now it's time to put this in to perspective... Common DAILY calorie intake for people trying to lose weight are 1200 and 1500 calories. Note, that is total DAILY calorie amounts. If I was trying to lose weight, on a 1200 calorie a day diet, 1 x 130g pack of m & m's is more than half the amount of daily calories in one day, and almost half for 1500 calories. It took me 5 mins to eat! The funny thing is when you start to compare the calorie intake in that pack of chockies to other foods... 675 calories is equal to 9 medium sized cucumbers, or 12 medium sized carrots, or 10 medium sized apples, or 5-6 muesli bars (35g). Now my goal here is not to get number bound with calories, nor do I recommend eating 9 cucumbers a day! But as you can see from these comparisons if you are not in the know, and don't take some due diligence with what you eat, you will not reach your weight loss goals. Simple. What you eat is ultra important, in not only losing weight, but looking good and feeling great. I get soo many people saying they don't like this food, or that food, or they they are too busy at work so whatever meal is available they'll eat, or it's too hard in a social situation... The list goes on. These are all the little barriers that come up on the road to success. Weight loss and good health isn't going to be served to you on a platter (no pun intended!) just like a championship sport tournament isn't just going to just happen for someone who doesn't put the work in. If you don't make changes to your diet, it's pretty simple... your body won't change! I have a new web page that sheds a little more light on this topic (read here) REALM TRAINING UPDATE With Winter in Melbourne making itself apparent it's hard to stay motivated, but crucial to maintain consistency so you don't drop off. More importantly, you can make some great improvements over Winter and be raring to go by summer. So keep up the good work guys! I'll leave you with some footage of the recent foggy and chilly mornings with Realm Training's group fitness class... 'Punch your way in to a fit 2009!'
