Motivation and Goal Setting

So how does motivation and goal setting compliment together?  By establishing a clear goal, it immediately lays out the floor plan for what you need to do to achieve it, rather than wondering aimlessly toward a vague idea.  As an example, if you wanted to put on 5kg of muscle with a due date 10 weeks from now, you immediately set an idea that you should put on ˝ a kg per week to keep in line with your goal.  So essentially, you create weekly, mini goals.  It also opens up the door to questions that need to be answered… e.g. what/how do I need to plan my food, how many days per week should I train, etc.

If you don’t set a goal, and plan how to get there you will severely diminish your chances of succeeding, especially if you are unfamiliar with the territory you are embarking on.  That is the power of goal setting, and can’t be underestimated.

When setting fitness goals, keep these points in mind:

1.  Make your goals MEASURABLE
Use tools such as your body weight, centimeters/inches, times (for run/bike etc), distance. </DIV>

By making periodical measurements, it will help establish whether or not you are on the right track.  You can either make adjustments to your plan if your progress is not up to scratch, or receive a great boost of positive reinforcement if you are!  Just another example of how motivation and goal setting work together.

2.  Make your goals REALISTIC
It has to be something you are going to put time and effort in to.  Don’t make a goal to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks if it is low on the priority list!

Set your goals high.  You can achieve ANYTHING you believe possible, but realistic in your own world at the same time. Setting a high goal is where motivation and goal setting work superbly well together as high goals exert high motivational forces.  When was the last time you were extremely passionate about something that was essentially a hard task, and got it done because your motivation was high?  (Don’t know if you noticed the word ‘passionate’ slipped in there or not??  A little bit of passion goes a long way!)

3.  Make your goals TIMELY
In other words, give yourself a time frame.  This in turn gives you a deadline, and therefore a sense of urgency.
